Its been going on for years (yes this bad). A few years ago pirates took over an entire cruise ship. The difference is that the news has been covering it more these days. The US doesn't have the resources to put Marines and snipers on every commercial ship. We have wars going on and a country to protect, we can't be running around playing armed guard to cruiseliners and merchant boats. And what would be the point of disguising a boat? So maybe we'd blow up that batch of pirates...but it wouldn't end the problem. This isn't just one group of people being pirates. Its people from all over the world, not just somalia. The somali pirates are just the ones who currently HAVE a hostage. But I'm betting somewhere in the caribean or near the philipinnes and indonesia there are other groups of pirates taking over boats as we speak. We can't nuke the pirates either...who are we going to nuke? A few boats in the ocean? The country of Somalia? Plus the damage would be far greater than what we even get out of it (which would be maybe a few months of decreased piracy in those specific waters) The best way to get rid of pirates is to honestly just educate captains, allow them to contract mercenary guards to protect the ships when they travel. If boats were armed, they could shoot down pirates before they get too close. Plus, ships should stay away from Somalia unless absolutely necessary. Edit: Bomb all the sea ports in Somali?
