Afghanistan Travel and Tour Guide
United States homeless veterans include a significant growing number from the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Many suffer from post traumatic stress disorder and severe sleep deprivation. Often those who have never suffered from the inability to sleep are unaware of how great of a toll such a problem has, in preventing those who do from being able to function well enough to hold down a steady job.
Many veterans have lost their civilian jobs due to extended tours in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere and upon returning home, find it very difficult to support themselves and their families. Many who are not currently homeless are in danger of becoming so, especially in growing economic hard times.
In 2006, approximately 196,000 veterans were homeless on any given night, up from an estimated 194,000 in 2005. Estimates of the total number of homeless veterans in the United States currently exceed 500,000; this figure doesn’t include spouses and children, who may also be homeless or severely impoverished.
An additional half million more pay over 50% of their income to cover their rent or mortgage. In the United States, 26% of the homeless population are veterans, while they represent only 11% of the adult population. In Tennessee alone, there were approximately 2800 veterans homeless on any given night in 2006 and, numbers have steadily increased due to the worsening economy since then.
According to many social service providers, while lack of income, disabilities, physical sickness, mental health issues and substance abuse all contribute to homelessness, the primary reason veterans are homeless is the lack of affordable housing.. And, this problem keeps getting worse, rather than better.
Regardless of religious, political or other persuasion, there is no excuse for the citizens of the United States to allow even one veteran or one veteran’s spouse or child to be homeless. Politicians who refuse to help them should be voted out of office and candidates who don’t place helping them at the top of their agenda should not be voted for in the first place, regardless of party or position on any other issue.
Americans who sit idly by and make no attempt to address and alleviate problems of poverty in general and the plight of homeless veterans and children in particular, demonstrate a severe lack of patriotism. And, they display a severe lack of historical and moral understanding and absence of personal ethics, responsibility, respect and dignity.
Do Americans who ignore the plight of homeless veterans really support the troops? Can we march in parades waving flags pretending to be patriotic while continuing to ignore our growing homeless population, regardless of the reasons why they are homeless?
What manner of nation claims to be the greatest nation on earth and to be a beacon for freedom and democracy to the rest of the world and yet, her citizens continue to look the other way while growing numbers of homeless veterans and children struggle in plain sight to somehow survive?
Why are there homeless veterans in America? You decide.

Because the people of America think the Government is greater than the collective "We". Since you brought up a good point, don't forget those in VA hospitals and nursing homes. They are not much better off. Some of the facilities are so bad you wouldn't think anyone would possibly consider putting your enemies in there especially war heroes or those needing medical attention. I am ashamed that we put up a shrine in a few cities to commemorate the Veterans, but actually ignore them. I appreciate your question very much and hope others at least think about it. Thank you. MD

This is near and dear to my heart– I can't understand how we can send them to war and they come back to nothing
I weep for them

That would be very hard for me to answer, since I think there should not be ONE homeless VETERAN in America. Given the fact that there are, a main reason is inadequate treatment of mental trauma that many war veterans returned suffering from. Young servicemen and now women come home in need of treatment, some lifelong and in a residential facility. Given their youth, the funding runs out all too quickly and they end up on the streets. Their families try to help but there is only so much they can do if a mind is too far gone by then to accept help. Our Viet Nam vets are seniors now, and that makes the problem all the more shameful.
This is a great AMERICAN tragedy, and one that our UN-American President-elect is unlikely to do anything about. Keep in mind that his Democratic predecessor is a DRAFT DODGER, who called the White House "home" for eight years. Meanwhile, our veterans are out in the streets. What kind of sick irony is that?
Instead of all the funding that is going to illegals, we MUST put forth the effort to locate veterans on the streets due to mental illness and care for them first. After that, we need to help the remaining vets on the street who need a hand UP rather than a hand OUT.
The shame of this nation is our homeless veterans. We owe these people much more than that, and we've let them down horribly.

if what you read from the radical repubes out here – they are helping them by not helping them.
you see, if you give someone a warm place to live, healthcare and a second chance (after the military ruined their lives in the first place) then you are really not helping them at all.
according to the new radical logic, when you help people you really aren't helping them at all – the radical cons think that everyone should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps and ignore the pain that exists in some lives.
in other words, the cons want to give them all a good talking to and that's about it.
why anyone ever goes into the military knowing this ahead of time i will never know.

Homeless veterans are growing every day. I myself find it hard to deal with the rules and red tape handed down by the government. As for the percentage of homeless, its getting much higher. I been fighting for VA comp. for 30 years, done everything possible. But I cant even get a lawyer like with your Medical from a normal on the job injury. With the VA Comp. you cant use a lawyer until it is denied form the BVA, of course this is depending on if the State Va Admin. releases to the BVA. There are a series of catch 22's that a vet finds them self in. I am staying with my Mom at 53 years old, I cant afford a place of my own, but yet I file for food stamps and get 10.00 for the month. Set on a corner and watch illegal aliens go in and out of the stores with truck loads of food, bought with food stamps. Never believe what you hear, get the facts. The fact is the US Government is killing war hero's, by prolonging the medical needs and finical support. Now I speek for want is happening to me and with other vets I speak to. Newspapers report only what makes them money.

Perhaps because of the effects of PTSD. A large proportion of the homeless are suffering from mental health issues.
Having said that I imagine most vets are on some sort of pension or benefits so you would think that that would lessen the presence of vets in the homeless stats.
If you are really keen on finding the answer contact the veteran's agencies to find out more.

Sure, by giving jobs, housing assistance, and free medical care to illegal aliens. You'd think that at least our veterans would come first. There aren't as many veterans as illegal aliens, so what's the problem?

this is a very good question and one of the most thought-provoking in a long, long while.
However, we must ask our elected officials WHY?"
I believe this issue should press on the American consciousness more than
(1) gay marriage, and
(2) what title former Pres. Clinton will use if Sen. Hillary is elected Pres. of the United States.

There aren't. As a percentage of the # of actual veterans, there are very, very few. Most of the people you see on the side of the road holding the atypical cardboard "Veteran needs food" signs are not, in fact, veterans. Most aren't homeless. Some are middle class.
MSNBC followed several to their cars after their "shift" at the side of the road to their suburban homes.
